1991 NCAA Division II National Champions

The UNO wrestling team of Coach Mike Denney broke new ground for the school when it won the national wrestling title at Fargo, N.D., in 1991. The Mavericks thus captured the school’s first ever NCAA title in any sport. The Mavs accomplished the feat in dominating fashion, clinching the title trophy before the evening session.

The Mavericks were a veteran and talented group. Six Mavs earned All-american status and two, Scott Ruff at 142 pounds and Pat Gentzler at 190, won national titles. Joe Wypiszenski finished second at 177, Jessie Smith third at 167, Ted Nelson fifth at 118 and Marc Bauer seventh at 126. UNO finished 13.5 points ahead of runner-up Central Oklahoma. It was also an emotional ride for the team, which overcame the sudden and tragic loss of former All-American Ryan Kaufman, who was killed in a traffic accident in February. Competing with the motto “Operation Maverick Storm,” the Mavs won their first North Central Conference title and sent seven athletes to the national meet.
