2004 NCAA Division II National Champions

Their theme was the “Band of Brothers,” but they will also be long remembered as champions. The 2004-05 Mavericks, ranked third in the nation, came from behind to defeat heavily-favored North Dakota State to win the NCAA II title in the final match of the tournament. Heavyweight Les Sigman, leading 2-0, won by medical default over Andrew Ubben of Fort Hays State to edge the Bison, 97.5-95. Six Mavericks became All-Americans and three reached the finals of the tournament. Still, the Mavs trailed No. 1 ranked NDSU entering the evening finals by 3.5 points. UNO’s two other finalists, Dustin Tovar and Patrick Allibone, finished second, but NDSU’s two finalists also lost, setting up Sigman, who wrestled with his usual efficiency to win his 31st straight match. UNO’s other All-Americans included Eli Dominguez and J.D. Naid, each third, and Mitch Waite, who finished seventh.
